Memorial Day

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. There are many stories concerning the origin of the holiday with several states claiming ownership. It is believed that organized women’s groups in the South decorated the graves of Civil War dead.  Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. Today we have expanded the holiday to decorate the graves of all of our loved ones. Our stores work with the local cemeteries so that we can take care of decorating the graves of your loved ones. Our most popular item, seen in the picture here, is called a wet pack. As the name implies the flowers are arranged in a piece of wet floral foam that is placed in a container with a water reservoir. This will insure that the flowers stay fresh throughout the Memorial Day weekend, even if the temperature does get warm.

Administrative Professional’s Week

This is the week that we honor and thank our administrative professional. This week was originally called National Secretary’s Week, but the name was changed several years ago to properly identify this important position. So far this year there has been quite a bit of activity this week. Hopefully that signals a warming in the economic freeze we have been locked in for too long. There is still plenty of time to remember your administrative professional and show them that you appreciate all the hard work they do for you!

Post holidays business

Well the holidays are over for another year. It is the slow period in January up to Valentine’s Day! Along the way there are still many occasions to order flowers, such as new babies, birthdays, anniversaries or for no reason at all. Sometimes the best gifts are the unexpected ones. Sending flowers “just because’ often has the most impact because the recipient is not expecting them and is totally surprised at the thoughtfulness of the sender! One of our most popular non-event arrangements is our “Have a nice day arrangement”. It is a happy face mug filled with an assortment of timely seasonal flowers. At the low price of $19.95 it is a terrific value and tells someone that you are thinking of them that day!

Passing Of An Old Friend

Sadly last week we learned with shock that Ron Youmans, the architect of our web sites had suddenly passed away having suffered a heart attack. To say that the news was shocking is an understatement. Ron never suffered any symptoms of heart problems and appeared to be in relatively good health. We have worked with Ron for many years and have enjoyed every minute of it. Ron was receptive to our ideas and tried his best to put them into practice. He learned a lot about the florist business in particular and the service part of the retail industry in general. We in turn learned a lot about good website design and practices.  Our sympathy goes out to Joanni and the other members of Ron’s family. We have been fortunate to know Ron and to cross paths with him. He will  truly be missed.

Administrative Professionals Week

Once called Secretaries Week, Admin Professionals Week is April 19th to 23rd this year, with Wednesday the 21st being Admin Professionals Day. The name was changed from Secretaries Day several years ago to encompass the new duties and titles of office support staff. Our stores are ready to help you remember your admin or secretary with gifts of flowers, planters, or candy. Call one of our stores or order on line to assure your sentiment will arrive when you want it to.

On To Easter

Well St. Pat’s is history for another year and dang I did not have a green beer! The brewery pub I was at seemed to think it was beneath them to put a little food coloring in their beer. Oh well, it was still fun. So now we move ahead to Easter and the official beginning of Spring. Spring in Oregon is a nebulous time of the year, it can start early or it can drag out until late April or even May. We are hoping this year that the mild weather will continue and that Spring will indeed be early. We are ready in our stores with lots of new spring containers and of course spring flowers. Tulips are plentiful and beautiful right now. Our “Mad About Tulips” arrangement is a huge seller this time of the year as everyone is anxious for some spring in their life. Another one of our best sellers has been our “Garden Bird Arrangement” as you can see from the pictures the container is made to look like an antique hand painted container. At only $27.50 this is a super value for any occasion or for no occasion! Order one today. Better yet order two today, one for someone who you want to send a sentiment to and one for yourself. At this price you can go ahead and indulge.

Ordering Tips

Placing an order on our website is a very efficient way to order. I receive copies of all those orders in my personal email so I see them come in at times like 2:00am on a weekend. Now don’t ask me what I am doing up at that time….but the point is that when you get the news that someone has had a baby, or is in the hospital, or you just remembered a birthday etc. you can place your order and it will be on our printer when we open the next day at 8:00am. Some things to remember about ordering online is that you don’t get to really talk to one of the designers if you want to “tweak” your order. You can put any comments you want in the special instructions section. Recently we had a customer call and say that she really liked the classic cube arrangement (probably our best seller) but did not want the orange and yellow colors. Well those pictures are on the website as a representation of what the arrangement will look like. It is not practical to put pictures up there of the same idea in 10 different color schemes. So simply put in the special instructions section that you would like the arrangement to be in shades of pinks and purples for example. Our designers are truly the best in the Portland Metro area at putting together the right colors and right textures to make your arrangement look similar to the picture but in the colors that you specify. As always, we know that without our great customers we do not exist and our goal is to make every customer happy within reason. Thank you for your continued patronage and we look forward to serving you in the future.
